SYNOPSIS

Welcome to Gideon Davorin’s Traveling Sideshow, where necromancy, magical visions, and pyrokinesis are more than just part of the act…

Mara has always longed for a normal life in a normal town where no one has the ability to levitate or predict the future. Instead, she roams from place to place, cleaning the tiger cage while her friends perform supernatural feats every night.

When the struggling sideshow is miraculously offered the money they need if they set up camp in Caudry, Louisiana, Mara meets local-boy Gabe…and a normal life has never been more appealing.

But before long, performers begin disappearing and bodes are found mauled by an invisible beast. Mara realizes that there’s a sinister presence lurking in the town with its sights set on getting rid of the sideshow freeks. In order to unravel the truth before the attacker kills everyone Mara holds dear, she has seven days to take control of a power she didn’t know she was capable of—one that could change her future forever.

Book Review ~ ‘Freek’s by Amanda Hocking ~ 4 Stars!

What an exciting, intriguing and spine-tingling novel! A travelling Carnival with paranormally talented members and acts? Count me in immediately!

We follow Mara, a young girl who has grown up as a member of Gideon’s sideshow, as she is pulled in different directions as she enters her final years as a teen. Desperate for an occasional escape from the sideshow, where the locals don’t view her as a freek, and she can be her own person, without the pressures of having to look after her clairvoyant mother and the sideshow family, she meets Gabe at a party, and suddenly she realises all that she has been missing out on. But even as their relationship deepens, darker forces attacking the sideshow mean that they aren’t safe, and no local person can be trusted.

I adored the carnival feel to the book, and loved getting to know the characters, the animals and seeing the feats of supernatural talent that the sideshow members could perform. Although I loved Gabe and Mara’s growing relationship, and their sweet scenes together, it was the times I spent with the sideshow cast and crew that I loved the most. I really connected to their world, their views of each other as family, and you could really get that sense of the members ‘Running off to join the circus’! I would have loved to have seen more of their acts, to experience more of the magic which we saw second-hand through Mara.

I loved how dark this story got. As a dark force hunts down the members of the Sideshow, I was sitting on the edge of my seat. What I really admired was how Mara wasn’t the girl to always save the day, but was hunted along with the others, and her powers are only discovered towards the end of the story, and not at the beginning like many ‘Chosen One’ stories.

An exciting story which packs a punch, Freeks is a definite must-read for fans of mystery, magic and family!

4 Stars!

Meet Millie and David (Tag) in the newest stand alone by Amy Harmon

“She said I was like a song. Her favorite song.”

the song of david book tour teaser

SYNOPSIS

This is David ‘Tag’ Taggert’s book, a supporting character introduced in The Law of Moses. This is a stand-alone story, but it is highly recommended that The Law of Moses be read first to avoid spoilers.

She said I was like a song. Her favorite song. A song isn’t something you can see. It’s something you feel, something you move to, something that disappears after the last note is played.

I won my first fight when I was eleven years old, and I’ve been throwing punches ever since. Fighting is the purest, truest, most elemental thing there is. Some people describe heaven as a sea of unending white. Where choirs sing and loved ones await. But for me, heaven was something else. It sounded like the bell at the beginning of a round, it tasted like adrenaline, it burned like sweat in my eyes and fire in my belly. It looked like the blur of screaming crowds and an opponent who wanted my blood.

For me, heaven was the octagon.

Until I met Millie, and heaven became something different. I became something different. I knew I loved her when I watched her stand perfectly still in the middle of a crowded room, people swarming, buzzing, slipping around her, her straight dancer’s posture unyielding, her chin high, her hands loose at her sides. No one seemed to see her at all, except for the few who squeezed past her, tossing exasperated looks at her unsmiling face. When they realized she wasn’t normal, they hurried away. Why was it that no one saw her, yet she was the first thing I saw?

If heaven was the octagon, then she was my angel at the center of it all, the girl with the power to take me down and lift me up again. The girl I wanted to fight for, the girl I wanted to claim. The girl who taught me that sometimes the biggest heroes go unsung and the most important battles are the ones we don’t think we can win.

FINAL10

Amelie and Henry didn’t come by the gym the next day. On Saturday, I thought I saw them once, beyond the wall of windows along the front of the gym, but when I looked again they were gone. I shrugged, deciding Henry must not have been as excited by the idea as Amelie thought he would be. A few minutes later I looked up to see them hovering near the speed bags, Amelie holding firmly to Henry’s arm, Henry looking as if he was about to bolt and drag his poor sister with him. They were garnering some strange looks—Henry with his crazy bedhead, his darting glances, and jittery hands and Amelie because she stood so still and looked so out of place in a gym filled with muscles and men.

I called a quick halt to my bout, escaping Axel, who was trying to pummel me into next week, and slid between the ropes that cordoned off one of the octagons.

“Amelie! Henry!” I called, noting how Amelie’s face was immediately wreathed in a relieved smile, a smile so wide it spread to her eyes, giving the illusion of sparkle and life. But Henry started backing up, pulling his sister with him.

“Yo, Henry. Hold up, man.” I stopped several feet from them and lowered my voice. “Did you know that Jack Dempsey versus Jess Willard was the very first fight to be broadcast over the radio?”

Henry stopped moving and his hands stilled.

“Do you know what year that was, Henry?”

“1919,” Henry said in a whisper. “The first televised fight was in 1931. Benny Leonard vs. Mickey Walker.”

“I didn’t know that.” Actually, I had only known about the Dempsey, Willard fight because I’d seen a biography on Dempsey on Netflix the night before. God bless Netflix. The mention of the radio had made me think of Henry and the sportscast blaring from his bedroom. “You wanna tell me more?”

“David ‘Tag’ Taggert, light heavyweight contender with a professional record of eighteen wins, two losses, ten knock outs.”

“You checked up on me, huh?”

Henry’s mouth twitched, and he looked away shyly.

“You did! What else did you find out? That all the ladies love me, that I’m the best looking fighter, pound for pound, in the universe?”

Henry looked confused for a second, and I realized he was searching his mind for that stat. I laughed. “Just kidding, buddy.”

“Six-foot three, 215 pounds, most often compared to Forrest Griffin and Michael Bisping?” Henry’s voice rose on the end, clearly seeking approval.

“I’m more charming than Bisping, and I have better ears than Forrest. But they could both probably kick my ass.”

“He said ass, Amelie!” Henry whispered, half shocked.

“Yes he did, Henry. It’s okay. That’s how fighters talk,” Amelie soothed.

“Can I say ass?” Henry whispered again, curiously.

“You can,” I cut in, “after you learn how to fight.”

SYNOPSIS
If I tell you right up front, right in the beginning that I lost him, it will be easier for you to bear. You will know it’s coming, and it will hurt. But you’ll be able to prepare.

Someone found him in a laundry basket at the Quick Wash, wrapped in a towel, a few hours old and close to death. They called him Baby Moses when they shared his story on the ten o’clock news – the little baby left in a basket at a dingy Laundromat, born to a crack addict and expected to have all sorts of problems. I imagined the crack baby, Moses, having a giant crack that ran down his body, like he’d been broken at birth. I knew that wasn’t what the term meant, but the image stuck in my mind. Maybe the fact that he was broken drew me to him from the start.
It all happened before I was born, and by the time I met Moses and my mom told me all about him, the story was old news and nobody wanted anything to do with him. People love babies, even sick babies. Even crack babies. But babies grow up to be kids, and kids grow up to be teenagers. Nobody wants a messed up teenager.
And Moses was messed up. Moses was a law unto himself. But he was also strange and exotic and beautiful. To be with him would change my life in ways I could never have imagined. Maybe I should have stayed away. Maybe I should have listened. My mother warned me. Even Moses warned me. But I didn’t stay away.

And so begins a story of pain and promise, of heartache and healing, of life and death. A story of before and after, of new beginnings and never-endings. But most of all . . . a love story.

SYNOPSIS

The one whose emotions I can’t feel is the one who makes me feel the most.

I was a sensitive, at least that’s what I was told by the boy who saved me from the overwhelming emotions that consumed my soul, the boy who saved me from myself when my gift became stronger. Through the years, he was my redemption, my reason to take my next breath…then, he was gone.

Jensen always told me I was strong, but I didn’t believe him until I was forced to be strong on my own, and I kept breathing without him. I’ve taken 42 million breaths since the moment he sent me away. Now, four years later, he’s standing in front of me, and I can barely breathe.

This isn’t just a story about the abilities I possess; it’s a story about something much stronger…the love of the man who possesses every part of me.

***Disclaimer – Feel is intended for readers 18+ due to strong language, mature scenes, and some violence.

FINAL10

“You know why I did that! I sent you away to protect you, Saige,” I yell, raking my hands roughly through my hair, trying to expel the guilt and pain. “I’ve never stopped protecting you…never.”

The hurt in her eyes kills me, and I step closer to her, slowly running a strand of her hair through my fingers. “And, what do you think of me now, Saige?” I ask, needing her to understand, to know that I never stopped loving her, and desperately needing her absolution.

Her eyes fill with tears as she takes a step away from me. The sadness in her voice rips through my soul, “Fuck Superman.”

The ache in my chest intensifies. Her breathing is labored as she glares at me, her fists coiled tightly at her side. She brings her soft, full bottom lip punishingly between her teeth again. Her eyes are screaming at me, but she says nothing. A full minute passes as I search for the right words to say. My time runs out as she blinks back tears before turning to leave.

“What are you going to do?” I yell after her pathetically.

“Find him,” Saige states simply, not taking the time to slow down.

“By yourself? What the hell do you plan to do with him after you find him, Saige?”

“Stop him,” she replies, quickening her pace.

“Will you stop walking already and answer me with more detail than two fucking words?”

Andy catches up and pushes me to the side, “Don’t get her talking more! I like her a helluva lot better when she uses less words.”

“Shut-up, Andy,” I warn before damning my pride and running after her. When I grab Saige’s arm, she flinches and tries to pull away.

I immediately release her, shocked by her reaction. “I’m not going to hurt you,” I barely manage to force the words out through the pain crushing my chest as I witness the brief shot of fear in her eyes.

Her lips part like she’s going to give another smartass remark, but she closes them, pressing those full lips together so tightly they start to pale.

“You don’t have to do this. You can walk away and start over somewhere else. I’ll help you, Saige. I taught you how to control the emotions. No one has to know what you can do, and you can have a life without all of this.”

You might be able to just walk away from people, but I can’t do something like that so easily,” she seethes, the pain burning so brightly it sets my heart on fire. Her eyes close, darkening when she opens them again, “If I walk away, people die. I won’t let that happen just so I can have some pathetic semblance of a normal life.”

Her bottom lip starts to tremble before it’s quickly sent back to its persecutor and bit so hard I flinch for her and quickly rub my thumb against the punished flesh, freeing the tender skin before it begins to bleed.

“Walking away from you was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” I growl, wanting to suck her lip into my mouth and taste its sweetness like I’ve done a thousand times in the past. Damn, I want her so badly, my body aches. “I just wanted you to have a real chance to put all the shit behind you.”

Taking a step closer to me, her eyes sear my entire being. The intoxicating scent of her kills me, but it’s her agony that is torturing as she whispers, “You expect me to just walk away from them to save myself?” The bitter laugh that leaves her lips is so unlike the Saige I remember. Her eyes close again. When they open, they hold me prisoner as she asks, “Could you?”

I run my hand down her neck and gently fist her hair as I lean so close, I can feel the warmth of her breath against my lips. “You have no idea what I would do, just how far I would go, when it comes to you, Saige.”

She swallows hard and her voice breaks, “Yes, I do.”

For a few seconds, I see the old Saige, a spark of the innocence that beckoned me like saving grace thirteen years ago. Then, her fist connects hard against my jaw before I have the chance to see it coming. Biting back a pained grunt, I roughly swipe my hand against my lip, wiping away the blood. My anger vanishes as soon as I see her body trembling. The wild look in her eyes rips my fucking heart out.

“Stay away from me, Jensen,” Saige whispers so quietly, I can barely hear her.

“Let me help you.”

She spins, never breaking her pace as she walks backwards and holds up her wrists, “No thanks; you’ve already shown me your version of help, twice, and I’d prefer to save my own ass.”

Book Review ~ ‘Feel’ by Karen-Anne Stewart ~ 5 Stars!

‘Feel’ left me with that wonderful feeling of having escaped to another world, one where love can conquer all, just like we dream it can. Karen-Anne Stewart has such a wonderful talent with words that she can make any love story seem strong and powerful without making it cliché or sappy. Instead she delivered an exhilarating love story between Saige and Jensen, and made us root for them from the start to end.

Saige’s story was a heartbreaking one, I loved the emotion that went into writing Saige’s character, as she felt like a real person to me, and one whom I admired for being so strong despite the trauma of her past. I wanted nothing more for her to have somebody else to help bear the burden of her gift, and Jensen was the perfect match for her. I have a soft spot for second-chance love stories, and this one was a very special one indeed.

This novel had the really fun feel of being almost a road-trip. The protagonists chase of the villain was brilliantly paced, and I never felt that the characters development was being shadowed by the thrill of the hunt for the bomber. The relationships formed on the road-trip were ones that gave a whole extra layer to the story, and I just adored seeing how Saige and Jensen connected more and more as their journey went on.

Karen-Anne Stewart very cleverly entwined paranormal elements to this story, but without it feeling like a hard-core fantasy novel. There were so many elements flawlessly added to Saige and Jensen’s story that can be so tricky to pull off well, but as always Karen-Anne delivers with sparkling prose, witty one-liners and meaningful relationships being formed throughout.

This was a brilliant, fun, moving and wonderfully written book which is another firm favourite. Karen-Anne Stewart never disappoints, and with ‘Feel’, she has added yet another book to my definite recommended list.

5 Stars!

A frantic mother researches her daughter’s flawed DNA in a race against time, suffering disappointment after disappointment in her search for a cure.

In this sequel to Sinners’ Opera, Morgan D’Arcy, English lord, classical pianist and vampire, finally wins his Isabeau.  Six months of painful separation have eroded Isabeau’s need to remain true to her wicked bargain with the most powerful vampire in the world, Lucien St. Albans.   During their estrangement, Isabeau gives birth to Morgan’s daughter, Eroica—a DarkeChilde, half-human and half-vampire, outlawed by the Vampyre Code.  She loves Morgan too much to live without him and relents to his enticing pursuit, but a dangerous confession nearly shatters their idyllic existence.  In a dark moment, Morgan tells Isabeau their child carries a defective gene that will cause Eroica to go mad at puberty.

Eroica D’Arcy is the subject of Isabeau’s deal with the devil.  When their beautiful blonde daughter reaches her twentieth birthday, she is promised to the Dark Prince of vampires, Lucien St. Albans.

FINAL10

PART I: Isabeau and Morgan

Beaufort, South Carolina

In six months, the pain should have subsided.

Grief and sorrow still twisted her heart. Isabeau clamped a hand to the burning in her chest and hurried through the darkness along the familiar path to the log cabin. She’d grown up in Beaufort, but it no longer felt like home.

Nowhere does.

Only the whisper of the pines broke the silence of the chill November night. Before she left the stables, she’d checked the white ceramic watch she’d bought on sale. The silver hands pointed to nine o’clock. In her jewelry box at home were countless reminders of a life lost. She never wore the emeralds, diamonds or expensive watches anymore. The jewelry he’d bought her glittered alone in the darkness.

Time had dimmed the exquisite, dreamlike happiness she’d known but not the memories.

By eight, her mother would have tucked Eroica into bed. She’d stayed too long with Bianco, grooming and petting the white stallion. On her sixteenth birthday, a transport van had delivered the answer to Isabeau’s prayers. For thirteen years, she’d begged her parents for a horse. The driver claimed that her father had won a contest, the prize a beautiful Andalusian. Bianco was the first of many mysterious gifts. For twenty-eight years, Marianne Gervase kept a secret from her daughter…and her husband. When Isabeau learned the truth, it was too late. She was already in love with her godfather.

Last month, on October 11th, a miracle was born. Isabeau intended to breast fed her little Libra, but the baby had tried to bite her nipple. Knowing who—what—Eroica’s father was, Isabeau bottle fed her daughter. As Lucien St. Albans had predicted, Eroica was a female reproduction of her father. She had his silken blond hair, his captivating blue eyes. Isabeau had rejected Morgan’s calls, hadn’t opened his emails or the snail mail letters arriving once a week. She was familiar with his iron will. In every way possible, he tried to seduce his way back into her life. If she’d heard his aristocratic voice on the phone or read the same lilting cadence in the emails, she’d have lost her battle against him.

But, God, it hurt.

The Thanksgiving holiday had raced by. After Sunday fried chicken, Isabeau returned to Charleston, she and Eroica alone in her echoing Orange Street house. She’d never accepted her friend Kirsty’s offer to babysit. Except for the hours spent at LifeGen earning their living, Isabeau hated to be separated from her miraculous child. She refused to touch the small fortune Morgan sent as child support. That money belonged to Eroica and would, one day, pay college tuition and settle her comfortably for life. She didn’t dress her daughter at the expensive children’s boutiques as her father would have done, but shopped at sensible department stores.

Isabeau’s life centered around Eroica and the genetic puzzle of nonhuman DNA. She longed for the state-of-the art lab behind Rover House, abandoned now for months. In fact, she yearned for the idyllic life she’d shared with Morgan. She’d been a princess, living in a fairytale spun by her beautiful lover. She hadn’t chosen this lonely existence. Fate and Lucien St. Albans had made the choice. The truth of freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose had been drilled into her heart. Yet, her life was in her hands now. Oh, but tonight she wished Morgan were near to whisper promises…whisper madness…into her ear.

A shadow materialized from the trees. Her heart chugged over a beat of fear. She halted in her tracks, a shiver rippling the hair at her nape. Who—what—lurked on the path ahead? Her mother wouldn’t leave the sleeping baby. Strangers failed to notice the dirt and gravel drive to the cabin. She tried to call, “Who’s there?” but her dry throat constricted.

Six months ago, Isabeau had made a bargain with the devil. Her racing heart cramped. Had he come to collect? The shadow wafted closer. Holding her breath, she retreated. Again, it moved. Too fast to be human. If the dark figure was Lucien St. Albans, she’d be lucky to escape the confrontation with her life.

“Isabeau.” The elegant voice would forever summon terror.

Dread iced her spine, her pent-up breath escaping. He would smell her fear, sense the dread pounding in her temples. Isabeau gripped her throat. How would he kill her? Rip her head from her body? Or drain her to a husk?

With Cardinal Desires, a vampire paranormal to be released by Double Dragon Publishing, Linda won the Georgia Romance Writers Magnolia Award. She is a retired Legal Assistant. She has two wonderful sons. She loves Andalusian and Lusitano horses, her snappy black convertible and her parlor grand piano—and writing, of course. Visit her at http://www.lindanightingale.com for a free story, Vampyre Hunt.

Her published novels are Gemini Rising, a rather controversial dark fantasy; Sinners’ Opera, a paranormal romance; Cardinal Desires, a paranormal romance; and Sinners’ Obsession, a paranormal romance sequel to Sinners’ Opera.
