SYNOPSIS

What do you do when you meet someone who could be the love of your life, but to be together, one of you will have to give up everything?

Kayla had her life all mapped out, before her ex-boyfriend tipped her world upside down by cheating on her. But she’s had her time licking her wounds. Now she’s ready to take time out for herself on a dream vacation in Hawaii. If that won’t pull the shattered pieces of her heart back together, nothing will.

What she hadn’t planned on was falling for someone new. Especially someone tall, tanned, and distractingly sexy. What starts out as a fun holiday fling quickly turns into a full-blown love affair, with neither wanting to face up to the fact that the clock is ticking until Kayla has to return home.

The first book of three in the Hawaiian Heartbreak trilogy. This book is recommended for readers over the age of 18 due to explicit sexual content.

Book Review ~ ‘Hawaiian Heartbreak’ by Libby Cole ~ 4 Stars!

I loved this first instalment of the Hawaiian Heartbreak Trilogy. Fun, flirty and fiery, it fits the bill for the perfect afternoon read.

Libby Cole did a brilliant job at setting the scene for this story. I’ve never been to Hawaii myself, but reading Kayla’s story, I felt like I was there, experiencing all the new things she was seeing, and falling in lust with the sexy tour guide like she was. I loved the scenes when she was exploring the island with Jay, as we see some serious issues being discussed, such as the water life, and the damage done by tourists in the past. Kayla was so eager and enthusiastic about learning new things that I just connected with her straight away. She was a smart girl, eager to learn new things but just didn’t have the chances in life to show her full potential. Her and Jay set the pages on fire, and it wasn’t just their insanely hot chemistry, but also their witty banter, and their obvious connection with each other, both emotionally and in their intelligence.

This is more than just a fun short story, it packs the emotional punch as well, and the ending will have you begging for the next instalment. I really admired how the story unfolded, and it has me desperate to know what happens to Kayla and Jay next.

I also have questions, I’m excited to see answered. What is the painful past that Jay has been keeping hidden? How do Jay and Adam know each other? All things I’m looking forward to in the next books.

Just a small thing, but I’d also like to see Kayla interact with some other characters. Other than the brief interaction with Adam, I feel like Kayla has only seen Jay. I’d love to see her get to know some other locals, or meet a newly married couple, or make friends with some other young tourists.

Gorgeously written, this is a wonderful read! Looking forward to Book 2!

4 ‘Fiery’ Stars!

Book Review ~ ‘Following Her’ by Melody Anne ~ 4 Stars!

Sweet and sexy, ‘Following Her’ is a gorgeous addition to the ‘Unexpected Heroes’ series, telling the story of the controlling FBI agent Axel and the stubborn, independent young lawyer Ella who is under his protection whilst she is the witness in her exes prosecution trial.

This was a lovely little story which you can easily read in an evening. It has all the elements that make a good solid romance, and I loved getting into both Axel and Ella’s minds as they begin to let down their defences and learn that sometimes it’s OK to work as part of a team and not just by yourself.

I loved the prosecution trial storyline, and was on tenterhooks each time Ella found herself being threatened. The way that her closest girlfriends rallied around her and held her together in her lowest points was so great to read. As much as I loved the closeness that Ella and Axel grew to have, I loved how real Ella’s life was outside Axel, and how to her, her friends were just as important to her.

4 stars only because I really wish this story could have been a longer one, or spread out into a novel size. I would have loved to have felt Ella grow more and more threatened by her ex as time went on, and to see a slower burn of her relationship with Axel. Nevertheless, a solid read which I thoroughly enjoyed.

4 Stars.

SYNOPSIS

My name is Milo Caro and I have a confession to make.

I’ve been in love with Colton Mathews since I was five. He should have known that sharing a cookie with a sugar obsessed little monster would do the trick–it sealed his fate. So really, the fact that he’s sporting a black eye, a limp, almost got ran over by a car, and was nearly responsible for another person’s death? Right. HIs fault. Not mine.

I made a pact with myself–this weekend would be different. I’d come home for my brothers wedding, smile, and Colton would naturally melt into my arms, we’d get married have five kids, live in a house by the river, and get a dog named scratch (clearly I’ve thought this through).

What really happened? I punched my brother in the face, Colton kissed me and apologized, I lied about having a boyfriend, oh and everyone wants to meet the mystery man.

They say laughter always comes before insanity–ha, ha. All I wanted was my brother’s best friend…instead I’m sitting in prison.

Let this be a lesson to you all…life rarely happens the way you want it to.

Damn cookie.

Book Review ~ ‘The Consequence of Loving Colton’ by Rachel Van Dyken ~ 4 Stars!

If you are looking for a book that will have you doubled over with laughter, and then within the space of a paragraph, doubled over with laughter again for a completely different reason, then this is definitely one for you. The perfect feel-good romp with a sexy hero, hilarious secondary characters, and a mind boggling heroine who you just can’t help but root for.

Milo’s infatuation with Colton is one that has lasted for as long as she can remember. Alongside her brother, Colton is the one that has always been there, for every embarrassing incident, every pretend game, and every kiss. But, after feeling rejected one too many times by Colton, for being merely his best friend’s little sister, she tries to move on going to uni and meeting her best friend Max. When she returns home for her brother’s wedding, shenanigans ensue, and between Milo’s clumsiness, Max’s flair for amateur dramatics and a whole lot of misunderstandings, it becomes a test to see who will live to see the dawning of a new week.

Colton was such a great hero. Hopelessly in love with Milo, his every attempt at showing it seems to result in him apologising, which being the hopeless guy he is, doesn’t realise is not the best thing to say to a girl after you kiss them. With the help of Max, and his best friend, he makes it his mission to win Milo over.

There were some great characters, and a really fun family atmosphere throughout this story that made it so much fun to read. However, my one issue with parts of the story is the way that Max and his brother discuss being taken advantage of by women. When reading it, I knew that it was not in any way the author’s intention to make rape or sexual assault any less of a serious issue than it is, but that in an attempt to add humour the seriousness of male rape/assault wasn’t as sensitively dealt with as I would have liked.

Nevertheless, this was a great read and my stomach muscles definitely got a work out with all the laughing I was doing.

4 stars.

FINAL2

Book Review ~ ‘Blood and Bone’ by Tara Brown ~ 4 Stars!

Well, wow! This book is just mind-blowing, and in a really good way!

We follow the story of Jane, a young girl who has amnesia after a car accident. She has a loving boyfriend, Derek, and a cat called Binx, and she feels secure, even happy…sometimes. That is until she is mysteriously mistaken for another woman, Samantha Barnes, and so her ordinary life turns upside down.

It is so difficult to put into words just what an explosive story ‘Blood and Bone’ is. At the end of each chapter, you are left desperate for more, desperate to know what the truth is, and which people Jane can trust. I really loved her character, and her inner dialogue was perfect, giving us a really good insight into her troubled mind and just how disconcerting it is for her to find out that everything she thought was real was a lie.

‘Blood and Bone’ is one of those books that I can’t describe the storyline, or even the characters for, because it is something that you have to read and experience yourself. Not knowing who to trust, and which characters to fall for, it was a roller coaster ride and you are left guessing right up the very end.

Tara Brown has delivered a solid psychological thriller, with so many great elements in the mix. There’s romance, danger, action and a strong psychological element, that has you unnerved just reading along with Jane and Sam’s thoughts.

I give ‘Blood and Bone’ a strong 4 stars. I couldn’t quite give it 5 stars because at the end, I was still slightly confused about just how everything fitted together. But this book has had me thinking about it for days after finishing it, which is the best sign of a good read that there is!

SYNOPSIS

No one has set foot on Earth in centuries — until now.

Ever since a devastating nuclear war, humanity has lived on spaceships far above Earth’s radioactive surface. Now, one hundred juvenile delinquents — considered expendable by society — are being sent on a dangerous mission: to recolonize the planet. It could be their second chance at life…or it could be a suicide mission.

CLARKE was arrested for treason, though she’s haunted by the memory of what she really did. WELLS, the chancellor’s son, came to Earth for the girl he loves — but will she ever forgive him? Reckless BELLAMY fought his way onto the transport pod to protect his sister, the other half of the only pair of siblings in the universe. And GLASS managed to escape back onto the ship, only to find that life there is just as dangerous as she feared it would be on Earth.

Confronted with a savage land and haunted by secrets from their pasts, the hundred must fight to survive. They were never meant to be heroes, but they may be mankind’s last hope.

FINAL2

Book Review ~ ‘The 100’ by Kass Morgan ~ 4 Stars!

I love novels set in the dystopian genre, so when I saw the adverts on television for the TV adaptation of this book, I knew straight away that I had to read it.

The dystopian elements are what drew me into this story, but it was the emotional elements and character development that kept me engrossed in the book. I really enjoyed the way that Keira Cass made almost half of this novel flashbacks to the past and half in the present day, as I loved getting little snippets of information about the characters pasts and the reasons for their current situations little by little so that in the end the characters that I really liked I began to see in a less than flattering light, and the characters I was unsure of, I began to really care for.

As soon as I started reading this book I had one hope for the story, and that was to see Clarke and Wells reconnect and move on from the trauma of their past, so I was so disappointed to see the author take the story in another direction, particularly as I felt that Wells was being painted as the bad guy too often, when in fact he was doing everything he did out of love for Clarke. Sadly, I think it was Clarke’s storyline, the one that I originally was most invested in, is the reason that I couldn’t give this book 5 Stars. Everything that Clarke did I began to feel angry about, and the introduction of Bellamy and the spark of connection between the two made me feel desperately sad as to the way the story was being taken, which made me begin to view these two characters, originally ones that I really liked, with annoyance.

However, that being said, the other storylines in this novel were in my opinion executed perfectly. I loved Glass, and she became the character that I rooted for above all the others, which was in a way a bit disappointing, as I was looking forward to seeing the action on earth, but due to my issues with the characters, I was more invested on the goings on in the ship. Luke was such a great character, and I loved seeing him and Glass reconnect. I felt far more emotionally connected to this couple than I did to the idea of Clarke and Bellamy, and my heart broke for Glass when she escapes the ship to earth only to discover that Luke had moved on with an old friend of his. This storyline was one that kept me on the edge of my seat and my mouth was hanging open at the end in shock. HOW COULD IT END WITH THAT!? The author did a great job at pulling me into the world and leaving me reeling with the secrets of the past.

Overall this was a really unique novel and one that I did enjoy, however I felt a bit let down with Clarke’s storyline, and in the end didn’t feel much of a connection with her, as I thought her affections seemed to jump around like a yoyo, making her seem a bit unrealistic. Nevertheless I shall read the next book in the series, and I really hope I grow to love Clarke as much as I hoped I would.

4 Stars.

Book Review ~ ‘Again’ by Lisa Burstein ~ 4 Stars!

‘Again’ is a wonderfully original story within the contemporary romance genre, which I know will resonate with a lot of people. Lisa Burstein beautifully addresses that burning question that many adults feel, ‘what if I had the chance to go back?’

From the get go, I sympathised with Kate and really admired her resolve to go back to University and make a change for herself, even if revenge isn’t the best motive to drive you. To see how desperate some people are for a second chance really resonates with me, and most especially highlighted the message that it is never too late to change your life path.

I love stories that have such strong messages running through them and in ‘Again’ Lisa Burstein did this perfectly.

Carter was an amazing character who was searching and atoning for his own second chance, and my heart broke for the pain he was going through and the guilt he carried for something that wasn’t primarily his guilt to bare. He was the perfect hero for this story, as we see him help and guide Kate in finding her own path whilst she in turn encourages him to move on from his painful sat and build a life that he can be proud of. The give and take on their relationship was lovely to read.

The only thing that keeps me from giving this book 5 stars is probably something that will only be an issue for me coming from my time as a psychology graduate. I’d have liked to have seen some more psychological intervention or motive for Kate’s alcoholism, and a more emotional response from her in the shadow of having fallen off the wagon and breaking the promise she has made herself.

The scenes where she was drinking I felt could have been highlighted a little more and shown to have a bigger impact on her recovery than
They did.

Nevertheless this was a superb, clever and funny book that I will know will be a hit amongst fans of the New Adult Contemporary genre.

4 stars.

SYNOPSIS

When seventeen-year-old Natalya’s dreams of being a ballerina are killed in a car accident along with her father, she must choose: shut down—like her mother—or open up to love.

Last year, Natalya was attending the School of Performing Arts in New York City. Last year, she was well on her way to becoming a professional ballerina. Last year, her father was still alive.

But a car crash changed all that—and Natalya can’t stop blaming herself. Now, she goes to a regular high school in New Jersey; lives with her onetime prima ballerina, now alcoholic mother; and has no hope of a dance career.

At her new school, however, sexy soccer player Antonio sees a brighter future for Natalya, or at least a more pleasant present, and his patient charms eventually draw her out of her shell.

But when upsetting secrets come to light and Tonio’s own problems draw her in, Natalya shuts down again, this time turning to alcohol herself.

Can Natalya learn to trust Antonio before she loses him—and destroys herself?

FINAL2

Book Review ~ ‘One, Two, Three…’ by Elodie Nowodazkij ~ 4 – 4.5 Stars!

I have a weakness for stories featuring Ballet dancers, and I knew as soon as I read the blurb that ‘One, Two, Three’ was going to be a interesting read.

Elodie Nowodazkji did a fantastic job at introducing the reader to the characters. Straight away I connected to them, and I could feel Natalya’s grief at the loss of her father, and her pain at having her future as a ballet dancer ripped away from her before it could begin.

It was the psychological aspects of this novel that really drew me in, and the author wrote them with such conviction that I felt myself absorbed in the emotional pains and stresses that NNatalya and her mother were going through. Having Natalya’s mother as an alcoholic added another dimension to the story which had my mind reeling with the implications. Would she become violent, emotionally or physically abusive? Or perhaps neglectful? All of the questions rose and I just had to keep reading to find out how Natalya’s home life would play out, and whether the unspoken truths that the two women were feeling would escalate in a way that made their relationship unsalvageable.

Antonio was a real breath of fresh air as a character. He swept in and attempted to keep the moments he was with Natalya light, even reminders of his own painful past returned. It was a sad realisation to see just how much young people are exposed to the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and the ways in which they will use it to escape their troubles. I loved that this story really brought in everyday issues that young people face, as it made it more realistic to read, and giving it all that more of an impact.

I adored how well rounded and developed the secondary characters were, and it was because of this that the novel really excelled. It was cleverly written how these characters were thrust into Natalya’s life, and the uncertainty Natalya feels towards letting people get too close, as it echoed perfectly the safe, solitary sanctuary that Natalya had created for herself at ‘The School of Performing Arts’, and the swift changes she had to make when she returned to a ‘normal’ life.

The only thing that is keeping me from rating this book at 5 stars, is the occasional stunted dialogue and development I felt there was in only a couple of scenes, almost as though it needed just one more look over by a beta reader. The scenes where Natalya gives in to alcohol, especially after her derision and disgust at her mother’s alcohol consumption seemed very suddenly out of character, and I didn’t quite feel her argument with Antonio flowed so well in this instance.

Nevertheless, this was a really wonderful, heartfelt book which is packed with the feel-good factor as we see a young girl overcome her past, and fight for her right to dance.

4-4.5 stars!
